A very commonly misunderstood issue

Controllers

A good controller is essential for a DC genset to give it's best.

We offer a range of controllers to suit many applications.
Some suit only certain genset types but most are interchangable so you can choose what suits you best.

Listed below are details of the Wattagan Phat, Tubby and Thyn controllers
(Sorry couldn't resist the temptation in naming)
Followed by details on some other brands as well.



The Phat Controller

The Phat Controller is our own design built specially for our gensets. It offers complete user control and integrated display. If you know what you want this is how to get it.

We have designed this unit specifically for our gensets to offer the informed user all the features, control and information you could want.

Built in LCD display showing System volts, Current flowing, Charging voltage and Current limit set.
And much more. No need for external instruments to see what is going on.
  • Configurable Auto Starting with multiple attempts and remote actuation option.
  • Auto engine Shutoff when charging is complete.
  • Remote engine Start and Stop.
  • Voltage adjustable on screen while running.
     One unit can provide 12V and 24V charging from the same alternator simply by adjusting it.
     Ideal if you have to service both voltage systems at different times.
  • Current limiting adjustable on screen. To prevent alternator stalling the engine at high load times.
      And also to avoid overcharge rates for smaller battery banks.
  • Optional Sensors for
    Engine temperature, Exhaust temperature, Alternator Temperature, Battery Temperature and Low Battery Electrolyte.
  • Settings for sensors adjustable on screen.
  • Error messages displayed on screen after any error condition.
  • Auto start Inhibit connection so other systems can control when starting occurs.
  • Separate modules so the Display can be remote from the Engine Control module.
  • Both modules mounted in stainless steel boxes. Display in the form of a Car Radio for ease mounting and operation.

The Tubby Controller

This is our intermediate controller unit.
Featuring: Robust design setable to 12V or 24V. 48V extra.
Variable voltage, Current limit, Auto Shutoff and Absorbtion time settings and temperature compensation.

This is a controller unit for managing the output of an Adjustable Field alternator (automotive type) for DC battery charging.
The unit is supplied in a stainless steel box similar to a Car Radio format and intended to be mounted in a similar manner. This features an automotive type Key switch for On/Off and can also be used to start an engine with an electric starter motor. It is also available in bare circuit board format on request.

This unit features.

Auto shutoff because we feel it is so important to be able to start the charger and leave it to shut itself off. For diesel engines this requires an electric shutoff capability on the engine.
Adjustable Voltage to suit your and your battery's requirements
  The voltage you set has a 2 stage step down by 10% during the absorbtion stage.
Current limiting to prevent stalling your engine when connected to low batterys. Very important.
Absorbtion time settings to determine how long the unit will hold charging voltage after it is reached.
Battery and Alternator Temperature Compensation. Very important for accurate charging.
A switching connection to turn on water pump or cooling fan etc when unit is running only. This is very important when used with a wet exhaust fed by an electric water pump.

A comprehensive user manual is supplied but an appropriate knowlege of battery charging requirements is required to adjust settings effectively. Each unit is supplied tested and adjusted for typical usage on lead acid batteries at the voltage requested.

The Thyn Controller

This is our simplest and most robust controller unit.
Featuring: Adjustable between 12V and 24V ranges. Variable voltage setting and Current limiting.

This is a controller unit for managing the output of an Adjustable Field alternator (automotive type) for DC battery charging.
The unit is supplied standard in a small sealed box with a button to start operation, a light to indicated charging and 2 adjuster screws for Volts and Amps.

It can also be optionally supplied in the stainless steel radio style enclosure of the Phat or Tubby units.

This unit features.
Adjustable Voltage to suit your and your battery's requirements
Current limiting to prevent stalling your engine when connected to low batterys. Very important.

Comments:
Not all situations need or would even benefit from many of the features of the Phat or Tubby units.
We often find that owners of these units do not end up using most of the features.
So, if all you need is voltage adjustment and current limiting this is the unit for you.
This is generally if you plan on deciding for yourself when to operate your charger and when to turn it off.

The Battery Miser

The Miser is a revolutionary charge controller which can allow much higher charge rates than conventional regulators.
It remains connected to the battery bank and monitors all input and output so that when charging it knows what the batteries require and adjusts accordingly.



This is a controller unit for managing the output of an Adjustable Field alternator (automotive type) for DC battery charging.
The unit is supplied standard in a sealed box and has to remain permanently connected to the batteries. There is no need to tell it to start or stop charging and no user adjustments.
The unit is pre calibrated to the type of battery the purchaser specifies it is for.
Recalibration can be performed by purchasing a recalibrated Smart Card which is inserted to alter the unit's operation parameters.

This unit features.
Often much higher rates of charge and shorter charge cycles.
Current limiting to prevent stalling your engine when connected to low batterys.

Comments:
Because of it's uncanny ability to allow batteries to absorb much more charge more quickly it becomse possible to charge at much higer rates. To take advantage of this however calls for much higher output chargers which is why this unit is typically offered on our higher output machines.

The Miser is only an output regulator so a motorized unit will still require starting and stopping and possibly some engine management controls as well. The Miser does not start or stop an engine or charging source. It simply utilizes a power source as it becomes available.

Each unit is supplied tested and adjusted for typical usage on lead acid batteries at the voltage requested.
Full details of the batteries to be connected are required for calibration before shipping.

SARV3

This is a USA made fully automatic unit. Just set and forget.

Available in 12V or 24V models this unit has internal switches which you set for the type of battery you have. Can manage input from multiple sources and has 2 load limiting circuits to cut back alternator load on the engine when auxilliary devices are to be driven.

More suited to continuous or long term running use than backup charging applications.

Ideal for controlling 1 or 2 alternators on 1 or 2 separate marine propulsion engines so as to get the best possible battery charging output from them while motoring.

Xantrex

Compact smart controller for continuous input applications

Available 12V or 24V versions each with optional Battery and Alternator temperature limiting sensors.
The Xantrex is very robust and completely enclosed in resin to protect it from marine environments.
