It has taken a long time and a lot of development to get to this point but we now feel we have the ideal machine for backup charging large battery banks.
Using a robust water cooled industrial diesel engine with heavy duty alternator and our own smart regulators we feel we are now offering what is really needed to keep batteries in the condition they need to be.
In all facets of design of this unit we have tried to adhere to the KISS principle.
Therefore as many components as possible can actually be sourced at your local hardware or automotive supply shop. There are as few "special" components as possible.
For example, we have used recycled steel drums for cooling water and fuel tank to keep costs down because a radiator and fan are expensive and complicated and more likely to fail at some stage. However a radiator option is available.

A bit more than double the output of the RAP1200 for the bigger battery or continuous load applications.

This unit comes with an integral fan forced radiator and fuel tank although a larger separate tank will often be found desirable. It is shown with a separate starting battery (for which it has a separate charging system) but this is only strictly required on 48V systems.

If you want the advantages of a Direct coupled alternator combined with Diesel fuel you need a high speed diesel engine. And Yanmar make one of the best high speed diesels available.

The direct coupled alternator eliminates belts and pulleys and mounting problems.

Standard with the Wattagan Thyn controller giving Voltage setting, Current limiting and Auto Stop.
(Auto Stop will only work if the fuel shutoff option is ordered as well)

This unit starts off as a basic petrol or diesel engined portable AC generator.
However it also has a built in heavy duty DC welder unit.

What we do is add our Thyn controller and some fancy switching and wiring so the DC welding output can be safely used for charging large battery banks.

We have developed this in response to the all too common tendency amongst those new to RAPS systems to purchase a common AC generator for backup. Certainly the portable AC generator does come in handy around the property.
And with a big DC welder built in this one will be even more useful.
But where most people come unstuck is that the DC output on most AC generators is virtually useless even at charging a car battery let alone a decent sized RAPS installation. So then you are faced with purchasing a large plug in battery charger which are expensive ($2000+) and some dont even work well with AC generators. Just so you can charge your batteries. So we made the Combo by adding our Thyn controller to provide proper regulation and control over the DC output this unit will charge even the largest RAPS battery bank without the need for a plug in transformer charger.
